Howth Head – Saturday 9th April 2016

Howth Head was the idyllic setting for our first hike. It is one of Dublin’s most popular walking routes and many others were setting off on their hike that morning. The forecast was for heavy showers, however, we were pleasantly surprised by the blue skies and sun shining throughout! We took off from the picturesque Howth harbour and made our way to the cliff top route. The views from the cliffs were truly spectacular, with amazing views of the islands and coastline of Dublin City and County.

There are a couple of walking routes to choose from and we decided on the longer one, the Bog of Frogs Loop. The track is very well maintained and it is marked by arrows throughout. At the halfway point we stopped for a brief lunch at the nearby Baily lighthouse, and then continued along the route, admiring many of the houses scattered along the coastline and taking in the fresh sea air. At one point along the route we had to cross the fairways of Howth Golf Club, which led to a small wooded area and track back down to the village! As we approached the village the smell of fish and chips was strong in the air, at this point the town was alive with tourists and the famous chippers of Howth were doing well.

Unfortunately we didn’t see any red squirrels, Howth is their last stronghold in Dublin, however, the hike was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and none more so than our four legged friend, Lexie! Next month’s hike will be in the Dublin mountains and you are very welcome to come along.
